revamping & reworking

something new & different

i’ve been thinking a lot about this site over the course of the last nine months or so. i’ve been deciding what kind of space would be most beneficial, and what makes sense.

long story short – if no one missed what was here before it probably wasn’t doing a whole lot to begin with.

hence, i decided to revisit my original plan for this blog. the original plan was to make it similar to a blog i followed until it was shut down – feather. it was fashion based on the weather, and despite the fact that it was based in nyc {and i’m nowhere close to there}, i still checked it daily.

it was fun and quick and inspiring.

the new plan for this site is not to scour the umpteen-thousand websites out there to find tons of new clothes that you’ll think you “need.” {no judgment though – it happens to me all the time. i still stand by my belief that wardrobe needs are a thing.} anyway, the point is this little site will be used for an outfit of the day. it will mostly be particular to where i am in the world, which for most of the time right now will probably be charlotte, nc.

these outfits will be straight out of my closet though. all things that i already have and own. the focus will not be on shopping, but in utilizing what you have.

i’ll add where things were purchased {as long as i remember}, and if you see something you love that’s no longer available, drop me a line and i’ll try to help you find something similar!

the plan is to post outfits in the evenings to help set you up for the next day. some weeks i’ll even throw in some weekend looks on fridays.

i’ll still try to include some notes about ethical and sustainable brands, because they are really important. but for now, we’re going to try a different take.

what do you think? are there any types of outfits that you want help putting together?

leave a comment and let me know!

this week’s best find: your own closet

as i was thinking about what i wanted to post for this week – brands, items, etc. – i realized that i didn’t have anything specific to post.

that’s not because there are no other brands out there, or no other fantastic finds to be had. there are plenty of brands out there we haven’t gotten to yet. really really great sustainable brands. and we will highlight them.

but today, as i sit here rejoicing that it’s fall {because if it’s september, it’s close enough, especially for a fall aficionado like myself}, for once i’m not going crazy thinking about all of the things i want to buy. i am thinking about the one or two things on my list right now, but not the huge list i used to have every time the change of seasons rolled around.

believe me, it has taken a loooooooong time to get here. and a lot of wasted money – ask my husband. but finally, finally, i’m looking at all of the clothes i have saying, “it’s too much” instead of “it’s not enough.”

so, as cheesy as it sounds – go shopping in your closet. pull out the items that you love, and find a couple of different ways to wear them. plus, regularly revisiting everything you have is a great way to make sure you don’t buy something else that’s eerily similar to what you already have in your closet.

or go on a shopping fast {i was always really bad at these, so i won’t judge you if you break it}. necessity is the mother of invention, and not allowing yourself anything new is a great way to appreciate what you already have. it’s also a great way to see if you actually have any holes in your wardrobe.

if you want help, call a friend and make it a party to go through and style your wardrobe. {or comment here if you’re local, and we’ll find a time to get together!}

have a great week!

brand spotlight: CB tees

i came across this etsy shop on instagram, and fell completely in love with it. the owner, carly, lives in australia and her shop is full of upcycled clothing!

she takes clothes she finds at thrift stores, and embroiders them to make them something new.

this shop gets right at the heart of why i started this blog. one of the reasons is because there are too many clothes that are not made responsibly. the other is because we can do with far less than we do. there are so many clothes already in the world. there are so many clothes that end up in landfills every single year. and carly’s shop is a brilliant way to reuse and reinvent clothes that still have a lot of life left in them.

my absolute favorites right now are these “sassy pants.” if they were my size i’d have a heckuva time not buying them.

she has inspired me to think further about upcycling. not just how can i reinvent things that are already in my own closet, but inspiring me to reconsider thrift stores from a whole new perspective.

if you need something that’s new, but old, go have a look!

have a great day!

upcycled

one thing i’ve thought about a lot more lately is the re-use side of fashion. so much of fast fashion is use it and throw it away, or to make ourselves feel better we use it and then give it away. {and there is something to be said for giving it away. although i’ve recently learned that a lot of donation centers can’t even use what they receive and end up throwing a lot of it away.} but what if we didn’t? what if we consciously bought only things that we needed? what if we bought things far less regularly, and only things we really thought about and really loved?

and what if we tried to repair and re-use them whenever something happened to them instead of just throwing them away?

i have started thinking more about this in part because of one specific pair of pants that i have.

two weeks, two trips: packing

over the next two weeks i’m taking as many trips with absolutely no down-time in between. the first trip is a service trip – running a day camp in brooklyn, and the second trip is a family vacation.

my husband and kids will pick me up from the airport at the end of the first trip, and we’ll drive to the beach for the second – likely without even coming back home.

i’m in the middle of the first week right now actually, and i made a concerted effort to pack lightly. what does one bring when headed to brooklyn for a week followed by a week at the beach?

as much cross-over as possible.

count the ways: double point earrings

these earrings. these are the earrings i posted about back here a couple of weeks ago. and back then i was really excited about them – i didn’t even have them yet, and i was ridiculously excited.

{double point earrings from Goodwin, via Goodwin’s site}
well, let me tell you, my love has not waned. there are so many ways to wear these earrings that it’s a challenge to figure out how i’m going to wear them each day.

and yes, i said each day. each and every day. because that is how often i’ve worn them since they came. every.single.day.

summer 10 x 10: days 7 & 8

for these last couple of 10×10 outfits i’m going to double up on posts mostly because i want to move on to a couple of different things next week – including a recap of the whole challenge.

these two outfits were both very simple and easy, which is kind of my jam in the summer, especially since it has been so stinkin’ hot as of late. {which is a lot of fun when you’re a/c is on its last legs} but it has also shown me that i can get away with not putting a ton of thought into my clothes, as long as there’s a little pop of interest somewhere.
